Anti-noise window: Subjective perception of active noise reduction and effect of informational masking

چکیده
Reviving natural ventilation (NV) for urban sustainability presents challenges indoor acoustic comfort. Active control and interference-based noise mitigation strategies, such as the use of loudspeakers, offer potential solutions to achieve comfort while maintaining NV. However, these approaches are not commonly integrated or evaluated from a perceptual standpoint. This study examines objective aspects an active-noise-control (ANC)-based "anti-noise" window (ANW) its integration with informational masking (IM) in model bedroom. Forty participants assessed ANW three-way interaction involving types (traffic, train, aircraft), maskers (bird, water), ANC (on, off). The evaluation focused on perceived annoyance (PAY; ISO/TS 15666), affective quality (ISO/TS 12913-2), loudness (PLN), included open-ended qualitative assessment. Despite minimal reduction decibel-based indicators slight increase psychoacoustic sharpness, alone demonstrated significant reductions PAY PLN, well improvement ISO pleasantness across all types. addition generally enhanced overall comfort, although water led increased PLN. Furthermore, combination showed effects, both significantly reducing compared alone.

Interplay of informational content and energetic masking in speech perception in noise
It seems plausible that different regions of the speech signal convey different amounts of information. Understanding which aspects of the signal convey information is important for understanding speech perception, particularly when this occurs in noisy environments. The so called cochlea-scaled entropy (CSE) measure is an index of spoken information based on the distribution of spectral energy...
متن کاملNoise Suppression Using Active Noise Control and Masking
This paper attempts to make the public/workplace environment more pleasant by combining techniques of active noise control (ANC) and the limited ability of the human auditory system to register a sound in the vicinity of another sound of sufficiently higher intensity. The paper examines the limitations of ANC and masking techniques, and proposes a way to integrate these techniques. A process fo...

The incidence of collisions between motorcyclists and other vehicles may be significantly reduced by research that improves the acoustic awareness of cyclists, and thus heightens the ability of cyclists to respond to unexpected incursions from the surrounding traffic. We use our hearing as an early warning system, and hearing swiftly redirects our vision and attention. This shift in gaze is cri...
متن کاملEffect of contralateral noise on energetic and informational masking on speech-in-speech intelligibility
This experiment tested the advantage of binaural presentation of an interfering noise in a task involving identification of monaurally-presented words. These words were embedded in three types of noise: a stationary noise, a speech-modulated noise and a speech-babble noise, in order to assess energetic and informational masking contributions to binaural unmasking. Our results showed important i...
متن کاملHybrid active noise barrier with sound masking
In this paper, a hybrid active noise barrier (ANB) with sound masking capability is considered. To protect the speech privacy, several sound masking techniques have been developed. However, these sound masking techniques based on the superposition of the masker and original sound will lead to increase in the loudness of the sound after masking. Against this problem, this paper proposes a soundp...
